MUSIC DIRECTORS

Codirector Hanneke van Proosdij is renowned for the elegance, virtuosity, and expressiveness of her playing. She performs regularly as soloist and continuo specialist and is principal early keyboard player with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Festspiel Orchester Göttingen, and she has appeared regularly with Hesperion XX, Concerto Palatino, Magnificat, American Bach Soloists. Concerto Köln, Chanticleer, LA Phil, Dallas Symphony, Gewandhaus Orchester and the Arcadian Academy. She received her solo and teaching diplomas from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague where she studied recorder, harpsichord and composition. Hanneke is a cofounder of the Junior Recorder Society, now in it’s twentieth year, and directs, together with Rotem Gilbert, the SFEMS Recorder Workshop. She has recorded over 90 discs for Magnatune, BIS, Koch, Musica Omnia, Carus, AVIE, Accent and Delos. Hanneke teaches recorder at UC Berkeley and has been guest professor at Stanford, Oberlin, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, University of Wisconsin and the University of Vermont. Hanneke enjoys reading books and hiking.

Codirector David Tayler received his B.A. in music and interdisciplinary studies from Hunter College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of California at Berkeley. A member of Internationally acclaimed Festspiel Orchester Göttingen and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, David has appeared with American Bach Soloists, Tafelmusik, the San Francisco Opera & Symphony, the LA Phil, the Oregon Bach Festival, Concerto Köln, and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, among others, and has recorded for Magnatune, BIS, harmonia mundi, Koch International, ORF, Sony, Reference, Arabesque, BMG, RCA, Musica Omnia and Teldec. David develops technology for the high-definition video broadcasts of Voices of Music and has filmed more than three hundred music videos of classical, baroque, renaissance and medieval music, as well as making editions of the musical scores together with Hanneke.

The directors of Voices of Music bring a unique blend of abilities to the ensemble, sharing training and university degrees in performance, musicology, art history, composition, teaching, science & sonology.
